HOW TO DETERMINE YOUR TRANSMISSION
 MAKE, MODEL AND GEAR RATIO

So you have an inboard boat and don't have a clue as to what make or model transmission it's equipped with
or you think you know but aren't sure.  This section can help.  First, a few odd facts that you need to know:

1. In the 1990's Borg-Warner sold their marine transmission division to Regal-Beloit Corperation.  They still
make most of the same marine transmissions.  They retained the name Velvet Drive which B-W had started
to call their transmissions.   So when we talk about a Velvet Drive 71C or 1005 transmission it is the same
as the Borg-Warner 71C or 1005.  Velvet Drive are now the only marine transmissions made in the USA.

If you already know the model number but not the gear ratio then go to Velvet Drive ratios

2. Hurth Transmissions, which were made in Italy, was purchased by ZF Friedrichshafen AG of Germany.
Some Hurth models are no longer made and Hurth model numbers have been converted to AF numbers.  Some examples of this are:
              Hurth number        ZF number
                 HBW-50                ZF-5M (now replaced by ZF-6M)
                 HBW-100              ZF-10M (now replaced by the ZF-12M)
                 HBW-150              ZF-15M
                 HBW-15OA           ZF-15MA
                 HBW-150V            ZF-15IV
                 HSW-250              ZF-25
                 HSW-450              ZF-45
                 HSW-630A            ZF-63A
                 HSW-800A            ZF-80A (now replaced by the ZF-85A)
    Go to ZF models

3. Paragon transmissions are no longer manfactured however most part are still being made and almost
all models can be rebuilt.  The water-cooled jacket type v-drive case is very scarce and generally not
    available.  Go to Paragon models
